Can you wear your hiking boots on a long day hike? And to class? And a (casual) night in the city? If not, it’s time to upgrade to the Ahnu Sugarpine Boot.
I’ve been wearing the Sugarpine boots every day for the last couple of weeks to work and class, on some snow-covered (easy) trails, and up a couple of moderate mountains in the Adirondacks of New York state.
Performance & Construction
This boot performs excellently on the trails. For those not familiar with the Adirondack State Park in Upstate New York, the mountains are filled with short approaches and lots of scrambling over boulders. The light-weight and low-profile design helped increase the fun while scrambling.
The waterproof lining rises up above your ankle, a gusseted tongue helps keep debris out of the boot, and the Vibram sole offers great traction. The trail and mountain hikes have also allowed me to put the waterproof lining to the test. Miles of snow and a necessary dip while crossing a creek proved there were no problems with the ability to keep water out.
However, while my feet stayed dry and comfortable on the trails, the lining made my feet a too warm to wear all day if I’m inside. Wearing your lightest socks while inside could solve the issue for those whose feet aren’t as warm as mine.
While I wouldn’t take them straight out of the box and into the backcountry, I had no issues breaking in the boots over a few shorter day hikes.
The boot looks great off the mountain too, as it comes five colors to help fit your personality (I love the yellow). I cannot believe the number of compliments I’ve received while wearing these boots, as I’m not normally one to have stylish clothing that people would take notice of.
They certainly did with these boots.
The design goes beyond what you’ll find in most women’s hiking boots. It’s clear that they pay very close attention to detail, design, and an outdoor woman’s lifestyle.
- Ahnu’s Numentum Hike Technology makes for a comfortable hiking experience
- Very lightweight and a low-profile
- Can wear straight from the box on shorter hikes; easy break-in period for longer excursions
- Did I mention all the colors it’s available in?
- Ran a bit small: If you’re often in between sizes (like me) definitely choose a half a size larger.
