Internship + Volunteer Positions

The mission of our Grassroots Teams is to build strong communities by instilling leadership skills in women. Using outdoor adventure as a tool, we do this by building female-led outdoor communities for women. Working alongside your fellow Team Leaders, your Program Manager, and the Grassroots Program Director, you’ll help create regular monthly OWA activities (e.g. casual hikes, ski days, climbing meetups, etc.) for your area, work with your Program Manager as requested to plan and carry out OWA events (e.g. larger scale happenings like film fests, weekend trips, skills clinics, etc.), and keep a six-month calendar of upcoming events ready to share with OWA partners (such as REI).

  • Commitment: approximately 4-6 hrs/week for one year
  • Location: Currently seeking Team Leaders located anywhere within California, Oregon, New England, and Washington State

The mission of our Regional Volunteers are to provide an extension of our existing seven Grassroots Teams and further build strong communities + grow a female-led outdoor community for local women. As a Regional Volunteer, you’ll work alongside a Program Manager and our Grassroots Program Director as you help develop a regional OWA Grassroots community in your location by creating OWA-approved events and activities.

Working alongside your fellow OWA managers and directors, you’ll help forge relationships with outdoor industry organizations. You’ll work with the team that makes up OWA’s Grassroots Program to create events and programming for over 15,000 women across North America, with a vision to bring the Program worldwide. You’ll head up conference call jam sessions with industry partners, assist in developing new projects with organizational partners, and keep your Program volunteers, including Program Managers, Team Leaders, and Regional Volunteers on track by creating deadlines and tasks that ensure projects are delivered on-time. You’ll be backed by a team who will help ensure your success and have some killer resume experience to boot! 

  • Commitment: 5-10 hrs/week for a year

Program Managers are our Team Leaders’ and Regional Volunteers’ first point of contact with higher-level questions. Program Managers help ensure regular activities are planned for each region within their management area and work with the Grassroots Program Director to create regional events, develop local brand partnerships, strengthen the leadership qualities of their volunteer leaders, and seek other opportunities for OWA to serve regional women through the outdoors.

Commitment: approximately 6 hours/week for one year or two semesters (the latter for college interns only)

Working alongside your fellow OWA managers and directors, you’ll help forge relationships with outdoor industry organizations and see sponsored social, editorial, and OWA-wide adventure projects through to completion. Working alongside OWA’s editorial team, you’ll help create strategy that builds a meaningful and engaging adventure journalism program for women (and their readers) worldwide. You’ll be hands-on in our WordPress environment at the final stages of revisions, digging into your data and SEO knowledge to help content get discovered via organic search. Your changes will help change the world—at least as it pertains to increasing the visibility of women in adventure journalism.

  • Commitment: Approximately 4-6 hrs/week for a year (or two semesters — college interns only).

Work with the marketing and partnerships managers and social media team to create branded social posts, posters, assist with occasional artwork on the website/articles, and create designs that are cohesive for fundraising and promotion for sale in our shop and at events. Your name will be attached to each product so you’ll gain recognition, too!

Work with the social media team in scheduling and monitoring engagement and growth on social channels; collaborating with the social media team to experiment with new ways of involving the audience with the brand and creating social media campaigns. Many chances to work directly with outdoor brands in promotions, contests, and giveaways. Minimum commitment of 10 hours a week for one year.

Work with the Digital Community Manager and Marketing Manager to create engaging content for our social media channels. You should be familiar with outdoor sports and versed in the “lingo” or willing to learn more about sports you are not familiar with. Must have a good sense of PR skills when communicating with the audience to avoid conflict, have an upbeat writing style with social media, and above all, be responsible and communicative. Minimum commitment of five hours a week for eight months.

Seek out funding opportunities to keep OWA’s programs running and provide room for growth. Minimum commitment of 5 hours a week for a year.

Work with various aspects of OWA’s programming, partnerships, social media, and editorial teams to create marketing campaigns and search for opportunities (events, campaigns, etc.) where the organization can promote its message. Graphic design ability is a major plus! Minimum commitment of 5 hours a week for one year.
