What: La Sportiva Mutant
Why I chose it: The Mutant is a stable and aggressive shoe. I tested these on dirt, scree, mud, big rock, loose rock, and ice, and never slid. The Mutant’s upper is more asymmetrical than the average trail runner and includes more contact points for lasting support and stability. Usually, I need to retie my laces every few miles, but the FUSIONGATE lacing system held the laces tight throughout my longer, more aggressive run. The system also forced me to untie my shoes before taking them off. As someone who frequently and impatiently kicks her still-tied shoes off after runs and collapses the heel counter over time, this is a smart addition.
