This week we've been highlighting what may be the most popular part of the Banff Mountain Festival but there's a whole other world to this mountain celebration. We'd be doing you no favors if we didn't include everything it has to offer...
Competitions
Have a competitive spirit? Like winning? Are you skilled in writing, film, photography? Heck, are you just a great all around mountain-living Canadian athlete? Put your skills to the test and you could win international recognition by entering Banff's competition in one of the following categories (taken from the Banff Mountain Festival Site):
Book- The Banff Mountain Book Competition is an internationally recognized literary competition that will celebrate its 18th year in 2011. Prizes are awarded in various categories which include Adventure Travel, Mountain Guide Books, Mountain Image, Mountain and Wilderness Literature, and more!
Film- Enter your film into the Banff Mountain Film Competition and bring the magic of mountain places and cultures, and the adrenaline of exploration and adventure to an appreciative, international audience.
Photography- The Banff Mountain Photography Competition is looking for your best mountain images – we invite you to send your mountain stories in the form of photographic essays.
Mountain Idol- Mountain Idols are individuals who excel in their mountain sport (alpine and Nordic skiing, snowboarding, climbing, trail running, biking, paragliding, adventure racing, etc.), are elevating the positioning of their sport in the Bow Valley's community, exemplify the outdoor lifestyle, are valued role models and/or mentors, and are, in general, valuable members of the Bow Valley outdoor community.
Summit of Excellence- Introduced at the Banff Mountain Film Festival in 1987, the award is granted annually to an individual who has made a significant contribution to mountain life in the Canadian Rockies.

If competitions aren't your thing or you feel you need a little more practice before you enter the competitions, Banff Mountain Festival & the Banff Centre offer you some amazing hands-on workshops to hone your skills. No excuses to get started on that life-long dream!
